Founders Day Service at York Minster

Old & Young Memories at the Minster

A unique gathering of more than 2000 Life-long Scouters from North and West Yorkshire will descend on York Minster tomorrow to celebrate the legacy of the founder of Scouting.

The occasion marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scouting movement, which celebrates its centenary this year.

Adults who have dedicated much of their adult lives to the adventurous youth organisation will travel from the far corners of the two counties for a commemorative service featuring representatives of the latest generation of Scouts.

More than 100 VIP Civic dignitaries will be joined by the likes of Nellie Hopwood, one of the first ladies to become a, “Cub Mistress,” at a Scout Group in the Leeds area 60 years ago.

The unusual mass gathering of Yorkshire Leaders will hear recollections and presentations on the joy of Scouting by the young members of the contingents from this area attending the forthcoming World Scout Jamboree in Essex later this year.

Three groups of 36 young people selected from our counties are to join 40,000 scouts from across the world to experience fun and adventure in celebrating the world-wide movement of Scouting.

The Founders Day Centenary Service also co-incides with the launch of a new book of Baden-Powell’s writings. The book is called “Playing the Game” and draws on autobiography, pamphlets, articles, speeches, and letters to friends and family. Much of the material Baden-Powell wrote between the two world wars focused on how young people can take practical action to build a more peaceful and tolerant world.
