EXHIBITION

On a recent visit to my sisters’ on the Wirral I discovered that there is an exhibition about scouting taking place at the local museum.

The exhibition “Being Prepared: the Story of Birkenhead Scouting” is currently displayed at the Wirral Museum.  It contains many important objects including personal items which once belonged to Lord Baden Powell as well as local items.

Birkenhead has an important place in the history of Scouting as it was at the YMCA in January 1908 that Baden Powell first announced the formation of the Scouts as a movement, following his experimental camp on Brownsea Island the previous year.  The 1st Birkenhead Scouts was the earliest registered group and in 1929, the “Coming of Age” Jamboree was held at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead, the largest Gathering of Scouts ever, until the recent Jamboree at Hylands Park in Essex.

On Saturday 26th January 2008, there will be a day of special activities taking place in Birkenhead, the mobile display unit will be in evidence as well as a rumoured visit by the Chief Scout. (Information has been difficult to obtain, but I hope to confirm all the details in the next few days).

As I did all my early scouting there, I intend to visit the area on 26th January and would be pleased to act as guide to anyone else who fancies a visit both to the museum and to the site of 1929 Jamboree.  There are some very good watering holes nearby as well as the fleshpots of Liverpool, should anyone want to tarry.  Travel arrangements can be confirmed when we have an idea of how many would be interested in this excursion.

For further details or to express an interest please give me a call.
